Taking a historic decision on Friday, Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman approved the induction of women as jawan in Indian Army’s Corps of Military Police.
Previously, women were only allowed to join Army only as Officers and that too in selected arms or branches. In a recent tweet, Ministry said that “Women will be inducted in a graded manner to eventually comprise 20 per cent total of Corps of Military Police.
The proposal to induct women as jawan was mooted by the Chief of Army Staff Gen Bipin Rawat. In a statement last year, he mentioned that women will be inducted in Indian Army’s Corps of Military Police.
Explaining the need for women as jawan, the officials said that there are times when they go for operations, while facing the odds, ladies come as a shield or protesters. And that is where role of women as military police will act quiet a force.
